Living off-grid in the scenic landscapes of Spain is a harmonious blend of embracing nature and being mindful stewards of our resources. One of the key elements in this delicate dance is water, a precious commodity that deserves our utmost care, especially when your off-grid abode relies on a rain catchment system.
Let's explore some practical and innovative ways to preserve and save water, ensuring sustainability and self-sufficiency in your off-grid oasis.
1. Harvest Rainwater Efficiently:
Maximize the efficiency of your rain catchment system from your roof by ensuring proper installation and maintenance. Clean gutters regularly, fix leaks promptly, and invest in a high-quality filtration system to ensure the collected rainwater is pure and safe for use.
We have a Berkey water filter so we can filter and drink all of the water we harvest from the rain.
2. Invest in Water-Saving Appliances:
When selecting appliances for your off-grid home, opt for water-efficient models. Low-flow faucets, showerheads, and water-saving toilets can significantly reduce water consumption without compromising functionality.
We have eco maserating toilets which break down the waste and deposits into a spetic tank which then goes into a soak away dug deep into the ground.
We also have a wonderful outdoor self composting toilet which we call our 'Loo with a view'. We have two chambers and we alternate from year to year. We mulch the waste with water and shavings and when it's ready we use as compost on our veggie garden.
3. Embrace Greywater Systems:
Greywater, the gently used water from sinks, showers, and washing machines, can be repurposed for irrigation. Install a greywater system that diverts this water to your garden, providing a sustainable source for nurturing your plants.
Our grey water feeds the flower beds outside of our home and we also shower in big tubs which we save the water and use it on our veggies. For this reason we only use organic, natural cosmetic products such as shampoos and body washes and washing up liquid.
4. Native and Drought-Tolerant Landscaping:
Choose plants that thrive in the local climate and require minimal watering. Native and drought-tolerant species not only contribute to the natural beauty of your surroundings but also reduce the demand on your water supply. Obviously succulents fit this role wonderfully.
5. Implement Smart Irrigation and Mulching Practices:
Optimize your irrigation methods by utilizing drip systems or soaker hoses. These targeted approaches minimize water wastage by delivering moisture directly to the base of plants, preventing unnecessary runoff.
Also mulch your flower and vegetable beds with trimmings, straw, cut grass etc to prevent evapouration and to supress the water.
6. Capture Morning Dew:
In Spain, where mornings often greet us with a gentle dew, set out containers strategically to collect this moisture. While it may not be a primary water source, every drop adds up, contributing to your overall water conservation efforts.
7. Install Water Storage Solutions:
Consider investing in additional water storage tanks to capture and store rainwater during periods of abundance. This surplus can then be used during drier spells, providing a reliable water source when rainfall is scarce.
Depending on your set up you may need to invest in more water storage such as cubos the most common being 1,000 litres but there are many other sizes too. We have a few 1,000 litre cubos dotteda around the farm each serving a purpose and we also have a 300 litre water tank that we strap to a trailer and haul water up to the farm when times get a bit desperate.
We have recently installed a 31,000 litre Tolmet water tank which has changed the game for us as we live on the side of a mountain so when the rain comes our track turns into a stream. We have landscaped the track so we can catch the water that runs along into our new tank. It fills so qucik!!!
8. Educate and Involve:
Empower yourself and your community by sharing water conservation practices. Organize workshops, share information online, and create a local network where off-grid enthusiasts can exchange tips and tricks for sustainable living.
Also speak to your local adjutament about other possible ways to supply water at your off grid property, you may be eligible to install a bore hole, private well or connect to the agriucltural water.
9. Prioritize Essential Water Use:
Identify priority areas where water is indispensable, such as drinking and cooking. Ensure that your rainwater harvesting system is dedicated to these essential needs before allocating water for secondary purposes.
10. Monitor and Adjust:
Regularly monitor your water usage patterns and adjust your lifestyle accordingly. Awareness is key to understanding how to best utilize your water resources without unnecessary waste.
Embracing off-grid living in Spain is a journey towards self-sufficiency, and water conservation plays a pivotal role in this endeavor. By implementing these practical tips, you not only honor the natural resources that surround you but also contribute to the sustainability of your off-grid haven. Let your home be a testament to the harmonious coexistence of modern living and environmental responsibility.
When buying your off grid property always explore all of the options available for getting water on your property. We have experienced some painfully dry months up here going long times without rain resulting in us getting a local farmer to come and deliver us some water.
Water if life and if you are looking to be self sufficent this is a key to your success.
